Climbing Weather
Potrero Chico has a semi-arid climate that is known for extremely hot weather in the summer – reaching 35°C (95°F) or more for three consecutive months – and moderately cool temperatures in the winter. The average January high is 16°C (61°F) and the average low in January is 7°C (45 °F). The hottest month is August and the coolest is January. Temperatures and precipitation levels are ideal from November to May, but comfortable climbing is possible anytime of the year if the afternoon highs are avoided. Within Potrero Chico canyon there are always places to climb in the shade or sun, depending on which is desirable at the time.
The precipitation is fairly stable and usually mild. The only period of severe weather is during the rainy season months of September and October. Other times of the year there can be no rain for months at the time, ensuring great climbing each and every day. Temperatures, on the other hand, are very extreme and unstable, sometimes reaching 25°C (77°F) in January and February. Snow is very rare.
Additionally, the weather within Potrero Chico canyon itself is often better than the camping grounds immediately outside or the city of Hidalgo down the hill. Even when it is wet or raining outside the canyon, great and dry climbing can still be found inside.
Climbing SeasonThe best climbing season is in the winter when it is cool and dry, between the months of November and May. The rest of the year is generally too hot or rainy, though you can still climb in the mornings and evenings. The peak season is December, January, and February, when you will find many climbers enjoying the park.
